JayZ and Beyonce bought a house "all cash."
<br><br> <br><br><br>JayZ and Beyonce bought a house "all cash."<br><br> Pinned by FinanceVaults<br><br><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvJgYd7fjVeF-LQH3T8a31g">@everyneed3959</a> explained it here:<br><br>For those who don’t understand let me explain: <div><br></div><div>1.) Jay Z and Beyoncé have $200 million dollars worth of assets. This can be stocks, bonds, etc. the assets have to be something the banks are interested in and I’m sure those 2 have strong relationships with their banks. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they put up their music masters as collateral as that’s something that could be very valuable to banks (tho I highly doubt this but it’s something to think about lol) </div><div><br></div><div>2.) jay Z and Beyoncé asks the bank for a $200 million dollar cash loan and uses their assists as collateral. So if they don’t pay back the loan then the bank gets to sell off their assets to pay off the loan for them. Jay z and Beyoncé are basically saying “hey if I don’t pay back this $200 mill you can have all these assets to cover the loan” and the banks are like “bet say less” </div><div><br></div><div>3.) Jay Z and Beyoncé now have $200 million dollars in cash but keep in mind it’s a loan still. They use the cash to pay for a $200 million dollar house IN FULL! They own 100% equity in the property. Equity is the value of the property vs. how much you owe. If you pay off the full value of the property then you don’t owe anything and that means you have 100% equity. </div><div><br></div><div>4.) Jay Z and Beyoncé now refinance the property, or get a mortgage. This is just a fancy way of saying they got a loan AGAIN and used the house they now 100% own as collateral. They did the same thing twice, only difference is the type of assets. When you use a house as collateral they call it a mortgage/refinancing. The only main difference is the terminology. So now they got another $200 million dollars cash </div><div><br></div><div>5.) Jay Z and Beyoncé now uses the refinance money, or new loan, to pay off the first loan fully. And now they are making payments towards the new property since they refinanced the house. This new refinance term, or new mortgage, has wayyy better rates and i am willing to bet their interest rate is 1% or even lower if that’s possible. And they can write off the interest payments on their taxes, lowering their taxable income. <img src="https://www.youtube.com/s/gaming/emoji/7ff574f2/emoji_u1f4b8.png" class="size_orig justify_inline border_" /> The main reason why they would do this is so that they have cash in hand without selling their assets. If all your “money” is in investments it might not be a good idea to pull your money out of them to then use them to buy stuff. It would be wiser to get a loan against your investments and use your investments as collateral instead. That way your money KEEPS GROWING in investments and you have cash ready to then buy more investments. If you have any questions lmk below. Thumbs up so ppl see.</div>

What if....Rap had given proper credit
<p> </p>It's 1993. Hip Hop is huge. I'm loving it. I know I want to be a producer and as I'm loving hip-hop, I am simultaneously falling in love with jazz (thanks to Benjamin Pruitt!) I get this idea to put jazz with funky beats. No one is feeling me, although my friends love Gangstarr, who has done it already. <div>There is a problem. I don't have any money to get equipment. Oh well, I'm going to try. Then as I have my portable FM radio on me riding the Dexter Bus to Northland Mall, I hear this song come on FM98 in Detroit. I hear this bass player walking a bass line. NICE!!!! Who is this playing? Then the drums come in NICE!!! Then I hear these horns. YES. I'm like what am I listening to that is that is sooo smooth. Then the chorus. </div><div><br></div><div>I'm so sold. <div><br></div>
<div>The song? <u>Rebirth of the Slick: Cool like that</u> by Digable Planets. THIS IS A HIT! I also thought, "This was the music I want to write! I told y'all you could do music like this live!" </div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Once again the chorus</div>
<div>
<div><br></div>
<div>I see my good friend Kindra Parker who is equally a hip-hop head like me. I say to her, Did you hear that song on FM98?</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>She starts singing.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>
<i>I'm cool like dat, I'm cool like dat<br>I'm cool like dat, I'm cool<br></i><div><br></div>
</div>
<div>I jump in too. This is awesome.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>I go back on the bus later to Northland and go to Musicland, one of the best record stores later rebranded as Sam Goody. I can't wait to find it.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Now, I learned how to red from two items: architectural digest and record covers. I always read the album credits. I wanted to know who was on every person who created the masterpiece I was listening to. </div>
<div>When you have the single "Rebirth of the Slick: Cool like that), you see this in the credits:<div><br></div>
<div><br></div>
<div><i>Conceived, freaked, and produced by Butterfly</i></div>
<div><i>Written and made lovely by all of the insects of digable planets. </i></div>
<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://i.discogs.com/GuF5I840VxYO13dVBiMhcM4tzi7qrJM6Rko9nlCXcrQ/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTg3ODIz/Ny0xNDg5MjcwMTgx/LTYyNjguanBlZw.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://i.discogs.com/GuF5I840VxYO13dVBiMhcM4tzi7qrJM6Rko9nlCXcrQ/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:600/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTg3ODIz/Ny0xNDg5MjcwMTgx/LTYyNjguanBlZw.jpeg" class="size_orig justify_inline border_" height="600" width="600" /></a></div></div>
<div><br></div>
<div>
<br class="Apple-interchange-newline">So at this point, I'm thinking they had some live bodies in the studio. Why? Well, that's how I made music at the time. So I thought everyone did that.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Then later I found out the truth: they SAMPLED.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>What if you bought the single or full album and it said this instead. Nope.</div>
<div>Even on the vinyl, there is no mention of the sample origins.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/VoYAAOSwKGRfW6pD/s-l500.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/VoYAAOSwKGRfW6pD/s-l500.jpg" class="size_orig justify_inline border_" height="500" width="500" /></a></div>
<br><div><br></div>
<div><br></div>
<div><br></div>
<div>I had no idea that it was a sample and it's wrong that the composer didn't get his credit. Mind you, I'm 15 years old at this time. I'm still trying to understand what sampling was. Being a young classical and jazz musician, this idea of sampling was foreign to me. What about the musicians? They are the ones that made the music? Now, this isn't to cast aspersion on Digable Planets. They are wonderful and I still bump their music regularly. AND, this problem isn't on them, it's on the label and producers (Pendelum and Elektra.) Then around 1995, I had learned that many (which is an understatement) songs hadn't been cleared.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div><br></div>
<div>
<div>Just for clarity, <b><u>sampling</u></b> is when you take an a portion of the actual source of a recording (whether analog or digital) and use it in a project. It is different from recreation or interpolating, which is when you literally perform another's person creation or sing/play a portion of a song respectively.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>This came to a head about three times when the great James Mtume had some interesting words about sampling. If you don't know who Mtume is, let's just say he has had arguably four great careers in music. We can start that he was a percussionist with Miles Davis. That automatically makes him a legend. </div>
<div>The his own band, Mtume, had hits. Yeah, that song <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYE5QEBOMA8." target="_blank">Juicy Fruit</a>, that's him.</div>
<div>Third, we can take about as a songwriter and producer for other people. How about "The Closer I get to You" or "You know how to Love Me." He also scored "New York Undercover." The fourth career is how coincidently about how his music has been a lifeblood for hip-hop.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>So Mtume lambasted producers on a radio show "Open Lines" for being lazy which garnered a nice attack by rap group <b>Stetsasonic</b> called <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kdQ4soLcac" target="_blank">Talking All that Jazz</a>. Now what is interesting about this: They MISSED Mtume's main point was to give PROPER credit to the people sampled and PAY the people who's music which conveniently gets lost in the sauce.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>So now, what if....a big what if......</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>What if Rap had given proper credit when they originally started sampling. What I mean by "proper" is that they gave credit to Everyone. What if they adequately and accurately cited the songwriters and musicians? I dare say, we would look at the music differently. WAAAAAYYYYYY differently. We would recognize the performers of the sampled and they would get their due! Mtume has said MANY composers did not get paid and lost out on millions of dollars.</div>
<p><br></p>
<p>Then the question must be asked: How did the unjust due start? Well, that is a looooong conversation. I think a better way to have this conversation is to look at Rap/Hip-Hops fun history. See, rap started off in its early form by DJs.....well ,ONE Dj (Kool Herc) prolonging jams by buying two of the same albums and playing the breaks, going back and forth to keep the party going. This technique kept going and eventually, people started to rap over these extended breaks. These breaks were usually found on the 12" versions of singles. Now people started looping these breaks and rapping over them. Thus is born Rap Music. </p>
<p>With this type of simple beginnings, it became easily approachable.</p>
<p>So as people started recording over these loops and breaks, no one thought over the legal repercussions. An essential loophole (or so they thought) was how sampling was not included in the copyright language of the time especially with digital recreation. Remember, just like Apple's Garageband can have the average joe make a song, these were just regular people having fun and saying stories/poetry over prerecorded grooves. All you needed was a turntable and a mic.</p>
<p>So did the authors of the music own the rights when someone put the actual recording in their music? Oliver Wang wrote beautifully on this matter:</p>
<p><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, serif;"><i>When sampling technology and practices became hip-hop's musical blueprint in the late 1980s, the business and legal rules were a thoroughly gray area. Since the techniques created digital copies of source material, copyright holders could argue that unauthorized sampling violated their intellectual property. Those doing the sampling could argue they were repurposing fragments of recorded music to create something entirely new. Up until 1991, disputes around whose argument carried more weight tended to be settled outside of court.</i></span></p>
<p><br></p>
<p>Per usual. technology comes faster than the law. Similar thing happened when VHS came out. Movie companies at first blocked it. Now movies like <i>Frozen</i> and <i>Avatar</i> have sold over 7 million DVDs and BluRay. Let's just say the companies have changed their mind! So now the court has to determine this gray area about sampling. Oops.</p>
</div>
<div>Now back to <b>Cool Like That.</b> There is another problem.</div>
<div>THIS SONG WON A GRAMMY!!</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>And it should have. YES, the song is amazing, It is a Classic.</div>
<div>This isn't an attack on rap, DP, or even sampling itself.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>HOWEVER, when a song wins a Grammy, the musicians on that song get it. Wait a minute, the musicians from the sample should get it too!!! And the person who wrote the sampled song didn't even get credit.</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>So what is the song? <u>Stretching </u>which was composed by James Williams on the 1978 album <u>Reflections in Blue </u>by Art Blakley. It's a fiery song in Bminor that is in Blues form, but doesn't quite follow traditional blues progressions. Featured on this song is Bobby Watson, someone I came to know while I lived in Kansas as he is the former chair of Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri Kansas City,</div>
<div><br></div>
<div><br></div>Rebirth of the Slick: Cool like that is an amazing composition and recording. It deserves everything it has earned. It still resonates with my generation. Right is right and wrong is wrong however. THIS was the original point of James Mtume criticizing sampling. Have integrity. PAY the people of the music you sampled. Now, perhaps they did pay James Williams. I don't know. Mr. Williams has passed on. When I talked to Mr. Watson, he said he was unsure. What is crazy is as bug as that song is, NO ONE KNOWS WHO PLAYED THE HORNS ON THAT! The composer of the sampled song and the band needs their due. Musical Integrity needs to prevail. Pendulum and Elektra Records should have known better. For that matter, ALL of the uncredited sampled song need their due. But for now, let's fix the aforementioned problem. Give these people their Grammy. If they hadn't made the song, there is no "COOL LIKE THAT!" Let the credits from this point read:<br><br><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cM4kqL13jGM" width="398" youtube-src-id="cM4kqL13jGM"></iframe></div>
</div>
<br><div><br></div>
<div>
<br><br><b>Rebirth of the Slick: Cool like that</b><br>Composed by Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler, Mariana "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira, and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving. James Williams.<br><br>Personnel:<br>Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler: vocals<br>Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira: vocals<br>Craig "Doodlebug" Irving: vocals<br>Art Blakey - drums<br>Valery Ponomarev - trumpet<br>Bobby Watson - alto saxophone<br>David Schnitter - tenor saxophone<br>James Williams - piano<br>Dennis Irwin - bass<br>
</div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Now we see the full music greatness of this composition. We see LIFE. We can read about the great musicians who are on this song!</div>
<div><br></div>
<div><br></div>
<div>Just for the fun of it. How about we take a few other song and give proper credits/citations of AL the players. These songs were CLEARED FYI: however, I just want to show you the musical depthness of these songs if they were to list all of the performers and include the songwriters.</div>

<div><b>Conclusion</b></div>
<div>With this type of credit listing, the argument of Hip-Hop not being music is absurd. People are being recognized and knowledge is being passed. Granted, Hip-Hop shot itself in the foot by not doing this first.</div>
<div>This would be amazing, This looks amazing. Let's make it right! If we can rename schools that once bore the names of crazy people, we can give the sampled performers their Grammy easily.</div>

What goes around, comes around
<br><br> Back in the <a href="https://smtd.umich.edu/" target="_blank">48109</a>, One of my composition teachers sat me down and opened up a great score. He saw what I was doing (which was terrible) and he showed me what this MAGNIFICENT composer had done. Few weeks later, I told one of my teachers about that score. He subsequently gave me that score. The composition was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Sw97NzvvsE" target="_blank">Beethoven 7th</a>, the teacher in that lesson was <a href="https://smtd.umich.edu/about/faculty-profiles/erik-santos/" target="_blank">Erik Santos</a> and the buyer of the score was <a href="https://www.aikmanmusic.com/" target="_blank">James Aikman</a>. 23 years later, I gave that EXACT same lesson Santos gave me with score Aikman bought me to my orchestration class. Thank you Father for Santos, Aikman, and Beethoven being in my life! You all have been such a HUGE blessing in my life. Oh, and GOBLUE!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I Wonder Why I Love Music so much?
<div style="text-align: center;"><u><b><span style="font-size: medium;">I Wonder</span></b></u></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span><div>
<span style="font-size: medium;">I Wonder Why do I love Music so much?</span><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">I wonder</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because first and foremost, my father and his sister played the music of Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Motown, Patrice Rushen, and many others over, over and over. </span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Did my love for jazz come from hearing "Boy Genius" Ray Charles, Killer Joe (perf. by Quincy), and Oh Lonesome Me by Count Basie<br>Or is it because when I attended Birney Elementary School, in Detroit, MI, my music and art teacher Lawrence Cotter introduced me to a plethora of composers like Leroy Anderson, Mozart, and Beethoven?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I was inspired by the pen of Dick van dePitte and Paul Riser and power of the DSO?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Howard House taught me trumpet and euphonium at that same elementary school, supplemented by seeing Wynton Marsalis playing a piece about a carnival on that instrument?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;">Or is it because when I heard Daisy Gaines play organ at Christ Reformed Baptist Church, I wanted to play like her?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><br></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">I wonder? I wonder...</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br>Is it because in Concert Band I played Gustav Holst, Granger, Vaughn Williams. Then you add Elgar, Sullivan, and Britten. Does this give me a undying love of British Music and its composers? </span><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because in opera, you learn about Verdi, Leoncavallo, and Puccini. Does this give us a undying love of Italian Music and its composers? Does it not want to make you go to La Scala?</span></div>
<div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because in all facets of music, you learn about Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky. Does this give us a undying love of Russian Music and its composers? Does it not make you want to go to St. Petersburg?</span></div></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because in jazz, you learn about Armstrong, Bechet, and Marsalis. Does this give us a undying love of New Orleans Music and its composers? Does it not make you want to go to Bourbon St?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">I wonder, I really wonder...</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">This really has me deep in thought.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Mendelssohn make you want to know what was he dreaming that Midsummer Night? Or what was in Fingel's Cave?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I wanted to cower and not go after my dreams, but Bird and Diz said "Now's the Time?"</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Spyra Gyra and Al Jarreau had me dancing in the morning?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because it felts so good to ask Mister Magic about street life during Mardi Gras with Angela looking her Naima in a Taxi?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Sonny Rollins give me interest to travel to Nigeria while Weather Report told me about Birdland?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because DouDou make me want to learn Djembe or breeze on 6 strings like George Benson?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">I wonder, I really do wonder.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Ellington made me want to Take the A-Train or Basie having me jump when it's One O'Clock?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Dr. Hailstork reminded me, "I made my vow?"</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Beethoven had me ask my mother, "Who was Elise?" or Smetena wanting me to take a boat down the Moldau?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I heard Rostropovich play Bach's Cello Suites so flowingly or Andre Watts tickling the ivories?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Marvin asked what was going on? and I answered, "My pain and headache follows me everywhere I do?"</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">I really have to ask these questions.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Mr. Morris told his dear love "You are the sunshine of my life"</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I didn't go to Clarksville, I decided to take that late train to Georgia?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because Benny Goodman had me ask "Where was the Savoy" or Duke Pearson and Eddie Jefferson had me ask "When was the last time I saw Jeannine?" </span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I was busted and I wasted time at the Bay thinking about how funk of a drummer I could be?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I whispered in her ear, "You're my shining star, always and forever, please don't go way from me?" or is it because I took a soulful strut to Cafe Reggio?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;">I wonder this at times.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><br></span></div>
<div>Is it because I love the fountains and pines of Rome or want to ride a faniculi?</div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;">Is it because no one must sleep until I find Daphnis and Chloe?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I find out why Joe was so killing or me trying to keep Freddie from Freeloading?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I'm running for no reason and I can't hide love from her, who shines like a sun goddess?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I don't believe He brought me this far giving me melodies from Heaven saying how wondrous is His Name?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I want to be the Chairman of the Board driving down Route 66 teaching the boy from New York City how to make money?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">Is it because I'm on the hill, not just blueberry or sugar, relaxing electrically because my account is paper thin?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;">Or is it because I had an inner urge to play dominoes and celebrate being Black & proud?</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><br></span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;">The question is, "Why do I love Music so much?"</span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">I Wonder, I wonder, </span></div>
<div><span style="font-size: medium;">I wonder</span></div>

Virtual Performance Video: How Long does it take?
<p><span style="color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">M</span><span style="color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-weight: inherit;">any people have asked how long does it take from from "start to finish" to make a virtual performance video. I have to give you an almost full-unabridged explanation so you can understand what needs to be done. It's not to scare you, but this is not a one-stop shop or an overnight feat! If someone asks you for one overnight, please allow them to read this. This is my response to a letter someone asking me," How long does it take?"</span></p><div style="border: 0px; font-family: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">1.)<span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><b>Pre-Production:</b> I had to make the click track. This was done by arranging the music of both<span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><u>Lift Every Voice and Sing</u><span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span>and<span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><u>Star Spangled Banner. </u> The average arrangement may take 8 - 10 hours. Even with my Synesthesia (I see color as I hear the music, which tells me the chord structure of the music as soon as I hear it.) Some may say it is<span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><u>absolute pitch</u>, but I don't hear it "stacked," I see the overall sound structure. So as far these arrangements and because the chords are already in my head, the songs took me 4 hours. It's not just about placing notes, it's about voicings and setting the music to perfectly fit your ensemble. With me having a smaller ensemble, voicing can be complicated.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Total Hours Pre-Production:<span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><b>4 hours</b>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">2.)<span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </span><b>Editing &</b> <b>Mixing.</b> This is where a bulk of my time is done. One could have crappy video, but EVERY expects great audio quality. What <span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) d</span><span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">o you have: ProTools or Logic? With your size band, GarageBand isn't going to cut it. </span>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">So to begin, you can't just take everyone's audio and just drop it. You'll have to align everyone's audio after you set up your template in your DAW. <span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">That comes to about a minute per track. Imagine if you were to have sixty people in your group! Some students had stereo tracks, some had mono. You'll have to decide how you'll want to do that. </span>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Some sent 24:44 resolution, some sent 24:48, some 16:44. That's technical jargon on how the music was recorded and how the computer will read it. It's kind of like old VHS recorders at SLP, LP, and EP. I even had a kid send an 8-bit recording which is the resolution of the first Nintendo Entertainment System. Translation: All files need to be the same resolution, or you can't play or edit them all together. If you are curious on what those numbers mean, here's a good link for that: <a data-auth="NotApplicable" href="https://www.technics.com/us/high-res-audio/what-is-high-resolution-audio.html" id="LPlnk" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="border: 0px; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">https://www.technics.com/us/high-res-audio/what-is-high-resolution-audio.html</a>. I strongly recommend recording at 24:48.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>

Some of the students sent files that didn't work so I had to wait on them to resend the audio. You also have to factor in time if the students don't know how to send separate audio and video files. MOST don't know how. Even fellow teachers don't know how. That can be about an hour for every thirty people. This is just PREPARATION to edit.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>

With thirty tracks, I had my time cut out for me. </div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Lower instruments take up more sonic room. What does that mean? </div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Picture the offensive linemen of your favorite football team. Now imagine them sitting on a bus. They aren't sitting two in a seat. If they do, it's uncomfortable for them. So with bass frequencies, you must let them breathe. Your bass guitar, string bass, tuba, bass drum, sometimes your trombones/euphoniums, violoncellos, and low range of piano are all fighting to get through the same door. When mixing, the engineer is trying to find a place to sit for all those low frequencies comfortably. This is a task. Do you want more tuba or more bass drum? There's not a right or wrong answer; however, it's a constant fight in your mix especially given the range of the tuba and bass guitar. You may have to automate who comes out more. This itself is a 1-3 hour process by itself sometimes. In gospel music, R&B, and house (where bass is more expected), it will definitely take more than an hour.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Now that we have the low-end done, I'm trying to make the rest of the band sound good. You have to align eighth notes/sixteenth notes which can be tedious.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Prayerfully, everyone plays the right articulation. I haven't even talked about intonation. We haven't been in the band rooms so it's hard to expect them to remember pitch tendencies. The bigger the band, the more you will have to edit. I only had seven people complete videos; this saved me a bunch of time. That still doesn't make the work easier; it's laborious no matter what.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>

Just to make sure we're clear, the resolution is basically how many lines are captured on the camera and how it is viewed on the screen. <span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">HD video (720 and higher) is about twice the resolution as SD (standard definition, what we grew up watching.) That's why old TV shows can't quite fit on Flatscreen TVs when watching it nowadays. </span><span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Therefore, some people's video you will have to stretch/alter the video so it can fit the full view of the screen. Now you will have a streamlined video. Lord help us if someone filmed Portrait instead of Landscape. Now we will have to wait for them to refilm it.</span>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>

<span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Now you must line up the videos, do transitions, and tell a story. Oh, don't forget to add your title cards, and everything. All this for a 2:30" video. For your band since it's bigger than my ensemble, you will need almost three times the amount of time I did for a cinematic feel. You could "cascade" the separate videos, but that's a hassle depending on how much power you have and those videos are the least enjoyable. That really should be used for effects. That's why when we watch professional films and television, they switch camera angles. Don't believe me? Watch a show and see how often they change the camera angle per minute. You'll be surprised.</span><br>

<div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></span></div>

I have to warn people who desire to do video editing. Everyone who has a Mac has iMovie. Problem is, HD video requires a lot of power and memory. Most people don't have sufficient memory and graphic cards to push multilayers of video. If you don't, the computer will sputter and drop frames. What I have found is that school-issued computers can barely handle two layers of videos let alone four! So when you have, or shall I say, when you see a video that has six people playing side by side, you need a computer to handle six separate million-color graphic videos at the same time. Go back to our football analogies. Try placing four offensive lineman in a Honda Civic and you're trying to race. Not going to happen. Ever wonder why your phone gets hot while playing certain games or watching <span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">movies? <div style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></span></div>

You have to buy Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere. They have two TOTALLY different workflows. You'll computer will have to also render cuts and the more transitions you have, the more power you'll need.</span></div>

My iMac is a 2011. I really need at least a 2013. Even at 32Gigs of RAM, it still stutters. Oh, that was additional $320 for my computer. <span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">All this for a 2:30" video.</span>

Remember, I do this for my church and the process is much longer for all of the aforementioned. Why? I'm dealing with about 10 vocalists and a six-piece rhythm section. A Six-piece rhythm section is about 14 tracks (8 for drums, 2 for piano, and everything else is mono.)</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>

If I remember correctly, your computer was short on RAM. The Macbooks from the last seven years can't get upgraded. The RAM is soldered on the motherboard. You'll need to purchase a new computer. The new Macbooks you will need will cost about $5200. This includes all the cables, adapters, and all the memory (128G) you will need. You won't be able to do all of that on a Chromebook or iPad.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>

How big is your hard-drive? You will need a separate hard drive to handle all those videos. Why? If everyone shoots at 1080p (Full HD), that will be about 330MB for a 2:30 min video, or roughly a Gig for 3 videos. You have 60 people? That's 20 Gigs. That's five DVDs of information. <span style="border: 0px; color: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">All of that memory for a 2:30" video.</span> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">So, if you do a concert of 8 songs (and the average concert band compositions/movements are 3 minutes long) it could be anywhere from 200 to 400 Gigs of information. Most computers only come with a 500G hard drive. Now imagine if you do a year's worth of concerts? That's six computers' worth of information.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; font-family: Calibri, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br></div>

</div><div class="MsoNormal">Many people have asked about which terminal degree to get; they want to teach music in college, and asked about funding.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Here are some FAQs that I hope to answer for anyone who is interested.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hope this helps!<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">Musically Yours,</div><div class="MsoNormal">Chad "Sir Wick" Hughes, PhD.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><br></b></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Should I get a PhD or EdD (for those in Education)?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">At the end of the day, they are both terminal degrees.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You aren’t going to get $20,000 more if you get a PhD over the EdD.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">So what is the difference?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">The difference is the coursework you take.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In general, you will have more applicable pedagogical classes in the EdD than the PhD.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>You will have way more, research, theoretical and philosophical in your PhD study, hence it being a Doctor of Philosophy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In most cases, PhD also has a foreign language requirement.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">Let’s look at two programs so you can see the difference.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Here’s a PhD and EdD program at Kansas State University<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/academics/graduate/curriculum-instruction/doctoral/phd.html">https://coe.k-state.edu/academics/graduate/curriculum-instruction/doctoral/phd.html</a><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://coe.k-state.edu/academics/graduate/curriculum-instruction/doctoral/edd.html">https://coe.k-state.edu/academics/graduate/curriculum-instruction/doctoral/edd.html</a><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">As you see, there are more PSYCH classes in the PhD course.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There are, of course, class overlap.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>So which one to get?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Your decision.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">So which one do I get if I want to be a superintendent?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">Once again, I have yet to see a job listing that said PhD only.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Just get ONE of them. One could argue the PhD is more “prestigious.”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>That’s just like saying UCBerk is more prestigious than San Jose State. Maybe it is. Maybe Harvard is more prestigious than said State University. At the end of the day, did you graduate? Did you get the terminal degree?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Make sure your vita/resume impeccable, completed degree, and be ready with your printed vision in this interview so you can get your dream job. <p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">So I want to be a band director in college?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">So the underlying rule to get a college job is a least a Masters including 18 graduate credits in the subject area.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Translation = you have a Masters in Education as long as somehow you have 18 graduate hours in music.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> This actually goes for ALL disciplines. </span>Events like Midwest Music Conference one can earn two credits. You can earn grad credits by even taking lessons. As long as that course number is 500 (some schools use 5000) and above, it’s a GRAD class.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Most places though still want the terminal degree in subject area.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">But (enter name here) doesn’t have a master in music and he’s teaching college?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">There are exceptions but exceptions are few and far between (and I do mean FEW).<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">More than likely, that person is considered staff and not FACULTY.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Plus, don’t try to get in through the back; get your credentials and you can keep you head up high. Also, said person, I promise you a) won’t get a job as a DOB and b) couldn’t get a job anywhere else and even c) is probably getting paid pennies because of lack of credentials.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">But I have PhD in Higher Ed?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">You still need 18 credits<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">But I have twenty years experience teaching band?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">You still need 18 credits<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">But …..?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Aren’t you a teacher? Stop complaining and get your 18 credits<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Okay, that makes sense.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What about scholarships so I can get this PhD/DMA/EdD in music</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">If you go full time, there are plenty of assistantships/fellowships for this.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Fulltime? I want to; however, I need to keep my job.</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"> Boston University and Teachers College at Columbia University are the ONLY online doctorate programs in Music.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> BOTH in Music Education. B</span>U is a DMA in Music Education: <a href="http://www.bu.edu/online/programs/graduate-programs/doctor-of-musical-arts-music-education/">http://www.bu.edu/online/programs/graduate-programs/doctor-of-musical-arts-music-education/</a><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">
<br>Columbia University is a EdD in Music Education<br><a href="https://www.tc.columbia.edu/arts-and-humanities/music-and-music-education/#degree-modal-degree-28">https://www.tc.columbia.edu/arts-and-humanities/music-and-music-education/#degree-modal-degree-28</a><br><br>It is true Kansas State and Auburn University have PhD Music Ed programs; HOWVER, only parts of them are online. It is NOT a fully online program. They require a residency there. Also, as a K-State alum, I can tell you the Music Ed PhD program there is through the College of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. It lies HEAVY on the non-music side. Excellent teachers, just heavy non-music. (Fred Burrack is one of the best teachers on the planet)<br><br>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">I don’t want it in Education.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I want it in conducting, composition, or performance.</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">You are going to have to go full-time.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">I can’t go full-time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have a job, mortgage, car note….</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">I understand; however, these specialty programs aren’t made to cater to you.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>If you want it in conducting, composition, or performance, you are going to have to go full-time if you want funding.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>That’s the sacrifice of getting in to those programs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And even if you can pay for it yourself, most places want you in residency<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> at least for a year. </b><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Therefore, you may be able to take a sabbatical to accomplish this dream.<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Residency? Why do I have to go full-time?</b><p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">Because they are specialty degrees, they don’t offer them “after-hours” like your education programs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Therefore, there is no practical way for you to get the degree while working.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>How are you going to get to theory at 11:00am and you have band at the same time? Music History at 1pm, applied at 3? And you’re a marching band director! Not going to happen!<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">So then you might ask why don’t they offer them after hours?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Because school is from 8-5. <span style='font-family: "wingdings"; mso-ascii-font-family: Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;'><span style="mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J</span></span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A lot of those programs are thought by adjuncts who are making extra money.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Not so much in music.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Final note: it is really hard to fulfill this degree in seven years part-time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>That’s the timeline for a doctorate. (your clock starts as soon as you start your first class as an accepted-enrolled student)<p></p>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">
<p> </p>

<br><br><b>So...what is this DMA?</b><br>The Doctorate of Musical Arts (A.MusD or D.M.A/some schools have DM) is a terminal degree that typical is awarded in performance areas i.e. Composition, music performance, and conducting. They might not have as much stringent research as PhD but encompass a huge amount of work in said areas. If there is a research side, it isn't typically as arduous as the PhD (but still difficult). For example, you may have to do a 40 page monograph/dissertation along side three huge conducting/performance recitals.<br><br><b>My masters degree in music. It's just easier if I get a PhD degree in Education. Can I still be a band director on the college level.</b><br><br>The short answer is "yes." It is usually preferred that the terminal degree is in said discipline; however, you still have the "credential" to teach on the college level. Just know that you'll be competing with people with Music Ed or Conducting doctorates who probably have some FIRE conducting tapes. <br><b><br></b><b>So why did you get yours in Music?</b><br><b><br></b>A degree is to help you grow. I wanted to grow musically. The time I spent in master's and doctorate program, I practiced and wrote more music than anytime I was working. Those four years were some of the best in my life musically. I wouldn't have had that experience being in an Education Leadership program. It's not my M.O. I promise you in an Ed Leadership program, you're not going to be talking about Maurice Ravel. Because I was in composition and conducting, I learned the Ring Cycle, Beethoven symphonies (3,4,5,7,8,9), Dvorak 8 and 9, Daphnis and Chloe, Mother Goose, Danzon No. 2 and countless others as a CONDUCTOR. This wasn't going to happen otherwise. <br>It was the first time in my life I could really focus on orchestra. Specifically as a composer, I wrote more (classical pieces) in school than NOT in school.<br><br><b><br>So let's say I do go ahead and quit my job and get this DMA in conducting. Why do I have to go two </b><b>hours away to get to school? Why doesn't "enter any school here" have the doctorate program in music?</b>
</div><div class="MsoNormal">In order for a university to offer a DMA/PhD, you have to have a large constituency that needs it. This is usually already served by the flagship or designated schools of the state. In order to have said program, the university </div><div class="MsoNormal"><ol>
<li>has to offer a Masters program in music </li>
<li>provide research funding for students and faculty</li>
<li>provide assistantship funding and/or fellowships</li>
<li>have a fully-supported staff, faculty, and ensembles.</li>
</ol></div><div class="MsoNormal">Also, most states have rules that say you can't have certain programs next to an adjacent school. OR like I said earlier, certain schools have designations. UNC-Chapel Hill is the flagship school of North Carolina but it doesn't even offer a PhD/DMA in Music. That designation belongs to UNCG! Same with UT-Knoxville. They don't even have PhD music programs. The TN designation belongs to the University of Memphis.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">Now coincidently, some these programs are not fully comprehensive, meaning they don't offer everything. Once again, Auburn's doctorate program is Music Education only. They don't offer Performance. T-Town Alabama is the state-designated comprehensive music program. You can't even major in music at Texas A&M University; you can at UT-Austin. Some states don't even have doctorate programs in music. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">So that goes back to why you generally have to go full-time to said music program. If you live in Wilmington, NC, you have to drive three hours to get to Greensboro. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div><div class="MsoNormal">
<b>You gave me a lot to think about!</b><br>You're so welcome! Just trying to help! Now to play angels advocate, if you're trying to be a principal/music supervisor, get it in Education or apply to the online programs at Columbia/Boston. You can keep your job while you get those letters!<br><br><br>

In music, you may write out what melodic ideas you may have.<br><br>Typically in literature, you have three main events (like in music's sonata form, we have three events also): introduction, conflict, and resolution (exposition, development, recapitulation in sonata.)<br><br>Now here's the catch: you can write any part at anytime.<br><br><b>You may have at first, the resolution.</b> Let's say your resolution is "he's reunited with his father." So now, you have to write the introduction and how is this going be resolved.<br><b>Finally, you may have a beginning </b>such "a cellist who wants to over his stage fright." Okay, now come up with the conflict and the resolution.<br><br>You can write any part you want first. If you are unsure of how to connect the two, have people who are readers help you sort it all out. I was lucky. I had LaKindra Parker, Althea Hughes Willis, and Earl Brooks making sure I connected the dots.<br><br><br>The same goes in symphonic music. You must have all three in sonata form. <u><b>Length</b></u><br>When writing your story, one thing to perhaps keep in mind is how long will your story be. I was CONVINCED when I first wrote my upcoming book that it was going to be a novelette.<br><br>Novelette? Okay, let me explain.<br><br>In the whole fiction genre, there are generally four categories as it regards to length. The Science Fiction Writers of America uses these measurements as their standards:<br><br><ul style="color: #222222; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em;">
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Short fiction: under 7,500 words</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Novelette: 7,500-17,500 words</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Novella: 17,500-40,000 words</li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Novel: 40,000 words and up</li>
</ul>
<div><br></div>
<div>I wanted to write a smaller story in length (novelette) to tell my story. Now if I were not self-publishing, this would pose a serious problem. <span style="color: red;"> Why?</span>
</div>
<div><span style="color: red;"><br></span></div>
<div>Most publishers stay away from the short stories and novelettes because of cost. Too small to print and too small to make money. Therefore, if you have a collection of short stories or novelette, it makes it more attractive to the publisher. Since this is my first book, I don't qualify for that!</div>
<div><br></div>
<div><i>What about e-publishing?</i></div>
<div>There is a market for this, a great market actually; however, the upper-echelon awards require hard copies. Depends on what you want out of it. If think your book is Pulitzer-worthy, then get it printed. If not, Kindle it is!</div>
<div>
<br><i>So What did I choose?</i><br>Because of my word length, my upcoming project would be classified as a novella. Contrary to popular belief, there has been MANY of novellas that have been erroneously labeled as novels:<br><br><br><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><i><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Symbol;">·</span></i><i><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"> "The Body" (Stand By Me, 1986) by Stephen King</span></i><i><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Arial;"><p></p></span></i></span></div>

<div>
<br>Mind you , I didn't say "I want to write 30,000 words." What I did say was that I wanted to make sure I clearly defined the plots and subplots in my story and I knew it would probably take that amount of words.<br><br>
</div>
<div><b><u>Construction</u></b></div>
<div>As in music, a lot of people miss out on a major thing: character development. It's important that your protagonist and antagonist have development which captivates the readers. In almost every great piece of music, literature, and film, these are developed. (<i>I can only think of one movie where the antagonist wasn't developed and that was Dark Knight. The Joker's character wasn't really developed if you really think about it. He was just villainously raw. However, he gets a pass because </i><i>a) the Joker is as old as our grandparents and most people already knew what to expect b) because of Heath Ledger's passing, we came to understand that he was going to return in the third movie which was going to answer if this Joker was Jack Napier, Jack White, Joseph Kerr or neither. So unless you've writing a character that we've known for eighty years, get to developing!)</i><br><i><br></i>In my case, at first, I did not develop one of my characters enough. My beloved sister Althea (who is a better writer than I and one of the most talented in the family) told me I needed to give this character an out. If I didn't, this character would be too vile. Something as small as one sentence gave a hint into the character.<br><br><i>Enter Earl Brooks. </i><br>Earl was like a professor the whole time in my process asking me questions with a stern literary critique. Although he did not ghost write, his questions provoked a lot of thought which were invaluable to my authorship. He made sure I understood the ramifications of using certain colloquialisms. Because of this, Earl made me see what my target audience was. Another key point we had major discourse on was how deep we needed to go in character development. Back to Althea's point, I went back and devoted a whole chapter to that character which answered everything Earl asked. This is what happens when you get a bibliophile English PhD student to critique!<br><br><br><b><u>Why do I share all this?</u></b><br>The reason is to show that everyone needs help. When you write, you don't have to show the whole world. Just get a selected group of people just make sure you dotted "I's" and crossed your "T's". Don't surround yourself with yesmen. Surround yourself with people who can amplify your goals.<br><u style="font-size: 14.85px; line-height: 20.79px;"><b><br></b></u>

Michael Jackson: The Quincy Years
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Michael Jackson: The Quincy Years</span></b><br>My brother Brad asked me,"What was MJ's best album?" This is a hard question and almost impossible to answer. My cousin Teshenia says I need to answer things better; however, this is still a trick question. WHY? All three Q-produced albums invoke a special flavor in musical history and importance. So here's my break down:<br><br><u><b>Off the Wall</b></u><br>This is MJ's most SOULFUL album. Powered by Louis Johnson (bassist, and of the Brothers Johnson), John Robinson on Drums (from Chaka Khan and Rufus), Greg Phillinganes (MJ's Musical Director, Stevie Wonder, Toto, Amp's Cousin, and a DETROITER!!!), Larry Carlton, Marlo Henderson, and David Williams on guitars, Paulinho Da Costa on Percussion, that money making horn section of Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, William Reichenbach, Larry Williams, and Kim Hutchcroft, and many others, THIS ALBUMS HAS FLAVOR!!!!!!!!!!!<br><br><i>Why it Could be called the GREATEST: Don't Stop, Working, Rock with You, Off the Wall...man. This songs will inspire anybody to write music and PRACTICE. Try solo in B major on "Don't Stop." Heck, arrange Off the Wall..Eb minor! SMh..too much funk!</i><br><i><br></i><i>One MAJOR note about this album. It is the only one out of the three to have Strings and Full Horn Section on a song. This orchestral sound is not found on Bad or Thriller.</i><br><i><br></i><i>Why it can't be call the GREATEST: two reasons, "It's the Falling in Love" and "Burn this Disco Out." If that wasn't enough, even Michael said he needed to make an album that would be talked about after he was disappointed at the American Music Awards</i><br><i><br></i><i><br></i><b><u>Thriller</u></b><br>OK OK OK!!!! It's hard to talk about arguably the greatest album ever produced. But does this make it his BEST album? More Keyboard effects here via Greg Phillinganes and David Paich to give it the new defined "pop" sound instead of "soul." Let's get to the point. The only flaw, and I mean, THE ONLY flaw with this album (from an instrumentalist point of view) is that it makes you want to produce on a higher level. This album doesn't send you to the practice room. It makes you want to get an SM57 mic for your snare drum and a NEVE console to record on, but doesn't make you practice your horn. However, it does make you think about when you make an album, is it sonically flawless? Best PRODUCED album EVER!<br><br><i>Why it Could be called the GREATEST: best produced album ever. </i><br><i><br></i><i>Why it can't be call the GREATEST: .....well...........just nitpicking, but doesn't make me practice (only diehard instrumentalists will get a kick out of that point!). </i><br><i><br></i><i><br></i><b><u>Bad</u></b><br>Here's the deal with Bad. You get deeper in MJ's mind. With him writing more songs on this one, you get to hear his creativity. Creativity that was stirring in his mind for years that he couldn't unless at Motown. yeah, he was young at motown, but that doesn't mean he didn't have idea's. The Jackson Five had no artistic control, the Jacksons had a lil more, but on BAD, MJ had total control whereas Q made sure it was tight!<br><i><br></i><i>Why it Could be called the GREATEST: MJ's most creative. Some might argue, Dangerous, but....nope. Seven No. 1's!?!? This album also changed the game with subsequent video releases. AWESOME!!!</i><br><i><br></i><i>Why it can't be call the GREATEST: Musically not as invigorating as "Off the Wall." More entertaining (and some darn good videos, even though, "Leave Me Alone" was a lil' esoteric.)</i><br><i><br></i><br><br>So that is my take! I just thought I'd write some mind-stirring stuff!<br><br>Most Musical<br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Do_wUqO8DO0/WK8Hit3PqnI/AAAAAAAAF7c/RW4TC6C2YdIdhI3Dy3Vj9Rv6HuF-dEHuQCLcB/s1600/Off_the_wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Do_wUqO8DO0/WK8Hit3PqnI/AAAAAAAAF7c/RW4TC6C2YdIdhI3Dy3Vj9Rv6HuF-dEHuQCLcB/s1600/Off_the_wall.jpg" class="size_orig justify_inline border_" /></a></div><br><br><br> Best produced MJ album<br> <img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/55/Michael_Jackson_-_Thriller.png" class="size_orig justify_inline border_" /><br>His most self-artistic, strategically-planned album <img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/51/Michael_Jackson_-_Bad.png" class="size_orig justify_inline border_" /> Let's Dialogue!!!

My mother passed on September 9, 6:00am CST. I miss her dearly.<br><br>I'm so grateful for the concert we had at the funeral. There wasn't much crying. Why? I wanted to celebrate her life. We had glorious singing by Kisma Jordan, awesome playing by John Douglas, Maurice Draughn, Nate Winn, and the Gabriel Brass Band. All my aunts said they had never been to a funeral like that before.<br><br><br>I'm ready to get back to blogging regularly now. She always said "I talked all day!" hahahah! Dream Come True: Maurica
I haven't blogged in a while. My mother has been sick. She's been situated. AMEN!!!<br><br><br>I recently recorded a great singer last month. She nailed the part of Pearl to a science on a song I wrote with Marcus and Steve called "Dream Come True" as if it was written just for her. You'll love her! Her name is Maurica Roland and SHE IS A BEAST!!!!!<br><br>I guess you'll want this blog to be a little longer. <br>Well, I needed a singer, I gave her a FB message. She said she''ll do the song. I drove to Nashville from Detroit (8 hours via Cinci). Recorded at 11:00am and we were done at 1:30pm.<br>That was it.<br><br>Love ya girl! I look forward to working with you in the future!!<br><br>Special shot-out to my brother, Dr. Bradford Mallory, for helping me pick the awesome takes on that song "Dream Come True"!<br><br><br>

Production 101: Rhythm Section
The most influential album in my life is arguably Quincy Jones'<u> Sounds and Stuff Like That</u>. In the liner notes (written by Alex Haley) Q calls Anthony Jackson, Eric Tee, Phil Upchurch, and Grady Tate the greatest rhythm section in the world. <br><br>As a youth, this was the first time I had ever heard the term "rhythm section". And truth be told, this was an amazing rhythm section. I even learned how rhy. sections would record first in EVERY studio section. This means they have to be tight. <br><br>Things to remember: <br><i>1) Pick your rhythm section wisely. They MUST gel. If they don't, your recordings will reflect.</i><br><i>2) If you aren't rehearsing, make SURE they can READ!!!!!</i><br><i>3) Make sure they can play with a click track. Yes, I have played with some that can't. AARGH!</i><br><i>4) Make sure they can play the style you want to record. (Yes, some people try to get a church </i><br><i> drummer to play afro-cuban and songo and they've never heard of it..)</i><br><i><br></i><br>I have recorded my rhythm section with NO rehearsals. They came in a sight-read the charts to highest degree. I believe I have been blessed with the greatest in the world! Time for shout-outs:<br><br>I was blessed to have keyboardists Demetrius Nabors and Al McKenzie appear on four songs on "A Tale of Two Fools." Man, they are phenomenal!!!<br><br>Guitarists Duane Collins, Sandy Love, Wayne Goins added that flavor that every album needs! My wife's cousin, Don Vappie, will be recording soon.<br><br>Bassists Ibrahim Jones, Marcus Belgrave Jr, Bobby Scharmann, and Freeman Spills laid the groove done HARD. People will be copying your licks forever!<br><br>The last two people were crucial to this projects: <br>Damon Warmarck aka Basso Profundo: My friend since 1992. My brother, thank you for your musical expertise. You coming by to the house to record while I was taking care of my mom was priceless.<br><br>Last far from least, my friend forever, I thank you Nate Winn. Out of eighteen songs with drums, you are on fifteen. There is no way this project would be done with you. You are a complete drummer. No style is out of your league. You came in when it was just a piano, you, and a click track. We even came up with songs on the spot! Superb musicianship. The pocket is amazing. The fills were immaculate! This is why you'll forever be "Tightus Pocketus!"

How to write a composition or story Part Two
<u><b>Length</b></u><br>When writing your story, one thing to perhaps keep in mind is how long will your story be. I was CONVINCED when I first wrote my upcoming book that it was going to be a novelette. <br><br>Novelette? Okay, let me explain.<br><br>In the whole fiction genre, there are generally four categories as it regards to length. The Science Fiction Writers of America uses these measurements as their standards:<br><br><ul style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em;">
<li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Short fiction: under 7,500 words</li>
<li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Novelette: 7,500-17,500 words</li>
<li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Novella: 17,500-40,000 words</li>
<li style="margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px;">Novel: 40,000 words and up</li>
</ul><div><br></div><div>I wanted to write a smaller story in length (novelette) to tell my story. Now if I were not self-publishing, this would pose a serious problem. <span style="color: red;"> Why?</span>
</div><div><span style="color: red;"><br></span></div><div>Most publishers stay away from the short stories and novelettes because of cost. Too small to print and too small to make money. Therefore, if you have a collection of short stories or novelette, it makes it more attractive to the publisher. Since this is my first book, I don't qualify for that!</div><div><br></div><div><i>What about e-publishing?</i></div><div>There is a market for this, a great market actually; however, the upper-echelon awards require hard copies. Depends on what you want out of it. If think your book is Pulitzer-worthy, then get it printed. If not, Kindle it is!</div><div>
<br><i>So What did I choose?</i><br>Because of my word length, my upcoming project would be classified as a novella. Contrary to popular belief, there has been MANY of novellas that have been erroneously labeled as novels:<br><br><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:DocumentProperties> <o:Revision>0</o:Revision> <br>Mind you , I didn't say "I want to write 30,000 words." What I did say was that I wanted to make sure I clearly defined the plots and subplots in my story and I knew it would probably take that amount of words.<br><br><br>
</div><div><b><u>Construction</u></b></div><div>As in music, a lot of people miss out on a major thing: character development. This is what happens when you get a bibliophile English PhD student to critique! <br><br><br><b><u>Why do I share all this?</u></b><br>The reason is to show that everyone needs help. When you write, you don't have to show the whole world. Just get a selected group of people just make sure you dotted "I's" and crossed your "T's". Don't surround yourself with yesmen. Surround yourself with people who can amplify your goals.<br><br><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Part III Coming soon!</span><br><br><br>

How to write a composition or story
Many people have asked me, "How do you write a story?" or "How do you write a piece of music?"<br><br>To answer the question directly, one must storyboard.<br><br>Traditionally, storyboard is defined as a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue, representing the shots planned for a movie or television production.<br>In literature, you write out your main points or events. In music, you may write out what melodic ideas you may have.<br><br>Typically in literature, you have three main events (like in music's sonata form, we have three events also): introduction, conflict, and resolution (exposition, development, recapitulation in sonata.)<br><br>Now here's the catch: you can write any part at anytime. <br><br><b>You may have at first, the resolution.</b> Let's say your resolution is "he's reunited with his father." THAT'S OKAY. Now that the time to write the rest of the book. <br><b>You may have the conflict first. </b> It could be "Johnny finds out his mom is not his mom." So now, you have to write the introduction and how is this going be resolved.<br><b>Finally, you may have a beginning </b>such "a cellist who wants to over his stage fright." Okay, now come up with the conflict and the resolution.<br><br>You can write any part you want first. It's funny how the correlation with art, music, and literature go hand and hand!<br><br><br>Whatever you do, just make sure you put it all together in the end!<br><br>

The French Horn
I have received numerous compliments on my writing for the French Horn. Although I am grateful for them, the truth is I can't take too much credit for it. I was immersed into a culture where the French Horn was played at a high level.<br><br>When I first arrived on campus, I met Todd Shamaly, a fabulous musician. He was the first to introduce me into the world of Horn. He was very humble and told me a lot about repertoire.<br><br>However, the next year changed my life forever.<br><br>The freshman French Horn class of 1996 was IMPECCABLE. These musicians were amazing and could PLAY! I don't know what happened but everywhere you went, you would here Götterdämmerung played flawlessly anytime of the day. I loved hearing Gregory Holt, Melanie Jahr, Julie Seidel, and my birthday twin, Mieko Hatano, practice. <br><br>Then there was Eric Kuper, Alex Ruthmann, and Kyle Hoyt. I could always count on them for the composers' forum. They were truly the most instrumental in my composing. They taught me about Bb, B, and C and how to place it CORRECTLY (which I still use their teachings to this very day).<br><br>Other great players that would play on my compositions were Thomas Schnauber, a wonderful composer, and Jeff Suarez, a MONSTER on the horn.<br><br>By the time I graduated, other great players came in. Rachel Parker Childers was there who is now playing with the Boston Symphony.<br>There was also Rachel Manea Vaduva, Will Wiegard, and Joel Wealer, who ironically played on my last recording at Michigan!<br><br>On a side note, I can't forget my HS section of Charles Van Hoy, Sean Smith, and Michelle Brown. Charles was the first french hornist I ever met!!!<br><br>So it is not I naturally knew what to do, I was around musicians who knew how to play!

Arranging vs Composing
There was a gentleman who told me that he had a professor who said "arranging was the same thing as composing."<br><i>Au contraire mon frère, ce n'est pas vrai</i>. There is a huge DIFFERENCE. I think the best way for me to talk about this is to talk about the arranging field with some history.<br><br><br><b><u>Origins</u></b><br>According my research, arranging as we know it started with Fletcher Henderson, Don Redman, and Paul Whitman (with Henderson and Redman being influenced by Louis Armstrong playing with them briefly). We hear popular songs which are "arranged" for this type of music and bands in NYC. They would take songs made popular form musicals and later on, movies, and play them in their ensembles. Think about songs we all play/learn from our Fake Books:<br><i>How High the Moon</i><br><i>Almost Like Being in Love</i><br><i>My Favorite Things</i><br><i>All the Things You Are</i><br><i>Star Eyes</i><br><i>There Will never be Another You</i><br><i>I love You</i><br><i>Over the Rainbow</i><br><i>Someday My Prince Will Come</i><br><i><br></i><br>These are all from MOVIES and MUSICALS. These were not premiered by Ella, Dizzy, and Bird but made famous in the African-American community by them. Let it be known, they did not write these!<br><i><br></i><br>We all know Fletcher Henderson's frustration. However, a great thing happened when he was arranging for Benny Goodman. Now, how much money did he make off the <span style="color: red;"><u>record sales</u></span><br>of Benny Goodman. Zero. WHY? Because those were his ARRANGEMENTS, not his compositions.<br><br>Ella Fitzgerald made us all learn the changes of <i>How High the Moon</i>; however, Nancy Hamilton and Morgan Lewis made a profit off of her albums!<br><br>Frank Sinatra's sound was made by Nelson Riddle and Billy May (just to name a few). How much money did they make from records? We don't know, but I assure you, with me knowing LA union rules, probably nothing. Why? They ARRANGED the songs<br><i><br></i><br><u><b>The 70's</b></u><br>Many people still to this day listen to the music of Earth Wind and Fire, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. They all had fabulous arrangers: Charles Stepney, TOM TOM 84, Jerry Hey, Paul Riser, and David Van De Pitte. Could you imagine <i>Reasons</i> without the symphony? Or the descending Db major 7th chord on<i> My Cherie Amour? </i>At the end of the day, it's not their music, it's someone else's.<br><br><br><b><u>Marching Band</u></b><br>I have two friends who repeatedly annoy me with something. They place their name on their arrangements and do not place the composers name on it. BIG NO NO! It is your arrangement, true, but it's NOT your music. This does not set a good example of your students in this field. They need to learn to READ the credits and find out who wrote it. (Oops, I said "read").<br><br>I remember when I arranged for the University of Michigan Marching Band. They had to pay Jobete and Black Bull Music for permission to perform the music (this was the most expensive show that year). Why am I saying this? They can, at any given time, audit your arrangements. How blasphemous would it be to have your music audited and Stevie Wonder's name isn't on it? <span style="background-color: white;">At the end of the day, it's not my music, it's someone else's.</span><br><span style="background-color: white;"><br></span><br><span style="background-color: white;"><br></span><br><span style="background-color: white;"><b><u>Point and </u></b></span><b><u>Summary</u></b><br><span style="background-color: white;">Arranging, no matter what, is still the reworking of someone else's idea. I don't care how fancy it is, it is someone else's melodic idea and their form. Yes, you can use melodic development, fragmentation, transposition, retrograde, inversion, and retrograde-inversion all throughout the piece (which are compositional techniques.) However, a</span><span style="background-color: white;">t the end of the day, it's not my music, it's someone else's.</span><br><br><span style="background-color: white;">I love arranging. It taught me instrumentation. It allowed me to test out of the instrumentation class (Music 371) at the University of Michigan. I will probably arrange until my last breath (I'm actually looking for another marching band to arrange for routinely). However, I won't receive any royalties from any of my fifty jazz-band arrangements (with multiple difficulty variations) and 150 marching-band arrangements. If I were to receive a royalty, it would be pennies at best. Why? It's not my music.</span><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><br>

Dead German's Greatest Hits and Music that swings!
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;"><i>We often make a fatal mistake of attempting to separate the so-called classical tradition of African American music with our rich and profoundly influential improvisational traditions. Ellington, Strayhorn, Monk and Mingus should appear on any list of African American composers. We should never accept the superficial and racist divisions of "high" and "low" or "classical" or "vernacular." To accept this division is to embrace the very racial barriers that we attempt to overcome. Our music is profound because we have made American music something much more than a pale reflection of European traditions. </i></span><span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"></span></span><br><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;">-<span class="il">Anthony</span> <span class="il">Davis</span>, Composer</span><br><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px; text-align: left;"><br></span><br><br><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">As a composer, I find myself defending at times my love for jazz, R&B, and hip-hop with some of my academic colleagues. This battle has been on-going since I first stepped on the University of Michigan's campus on August 21, 1995. What has irked me is when people hear my "classical-style" compositions, they would say remarks such as "Oh, it's so jazzy" with a tone of belittlement. </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">At times, I almost felt ashamed to incorporated the influences of my youth in my symphonic repertoire. </span>
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">However, when I look at the music of Bright Sheng, a composer I respect highly, he incorporates Chinese-influenced melodies in his music repeatedly with no shame. The same of Arturo Màrquez, composer of the famed "Danzon No. 2", and Zhou Long, Pulitzer Prize winning composer.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">In Fall of 2002, I stopped composing in the classical style. I focused on marching and jazz band arranging, composing tunes, and learning how to be a good teacher in the Detroit Public School (which I loved). Why? I was tired of competing with dead Germans and Austrians. How frustrating is it to pour your heart out on a twenty minute opus only to be turned down routinely by conductors? Yet, I would arrange the hottest song on the radio and it would be played immediately by any marching band in the city. Better yet, I would arrange a chart for Ben's Friends Big Band and it would be programmed on the next concert.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">With years of coercing by Damian Crutcher, Armand Hall, Jamal Duncan, Kelvin Washington, and Ed Quick, I turned to the concert band. I loved it. I wrote five band pieces in fourteen months and I thank them for their support and encouragement!</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">Another change of events happened which I thought would never happened. I returned to academia in the fall of 2010 to finish my Master's of Music at Kansas State University. I then returned to orchestral composition. Craig Weston was an amazing teacher and was open to the incorporation of non-European styles in my music. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">With all this being said, I still see a problem with trying to compete with Dead German's Greatest Hits. Orchestras still won't play my music. Maybe it sucks. Maybe it doesn't; however, the issue is the same with fellow composers.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">Solution: </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">1) I am no longer by the LEAST apologetic for my love for jazz, R&B, and hip-hop. That's right. Hip-Hop. While I am reading essays of Joshua Rifkin, it is accompanied by KRS-One or CL Smooth. When I read biographies of the Second Viennese School, be sure to know that Basie is being played.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">2) If I write a non-commissioned composition, I understand that it probably won't be played any time soon. I am okay with that. No one asked me to write it so they won't program it. In the words of myself, Brandon Williams, and Ibrahim Jones, "It is what it is!"</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">3) I attempted to write a "what is this?". What's a "What is This"? I wanted to write a large opus that had all my musical loves: classical, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop/rap. Think about West Side Story. Is it a musical? Operetta? Who cares, it's great music. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> In my youth, I didn't understand how to put it together. I did everything backwards. I wrote the music first and then tried to write a script/libretto. Not too smart. I abandoned the project.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> I will never forget the words of my friend and Sinfonian brother William Tonnisen, "Hey man, you should finish that opera. There was some good music in there." Jay Berckley also gave me similar encouragement.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> In December of 2009, I recorded one of the arias from that unfinished "What is this" with the group Relativity/Trio Nomadian (Damon Warmack, Demetrius Nabors, and Nate Winn aka Tightus Pocketus) . It was a composition entitled "Daddy's Little Girl." By the time I added the orchestra to the recording, I realized I finally had the composition EXACTLY how I wanted it.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">I then thought to myself, "Maybe I should finish the 'What is this'"?</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> As time went by, I knew I needed to write a story FIRST before composing (that didn't always happened but I did finish the story this time. )</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> I remembered earlier on in 1997, Bright Sheng gave me some suggestions for my libretto (great ones I must add) but it just wasn't coming together. However, after an in-depth conversation with Anniece Warren in January 2011 about my music, I finally came up with the story. Actually, I came up with several different stories which I'll eventually (Lord willing) write to all of them. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> I officially wrote the storyboard in October 2011 (I came up with the storyboard in Feb but I didn't write it down). Initially, I was going to just place a short synopsis in the liner notes of my CD; however, thanks to the critique ofLaKindra Parker, I went ahead and wrote it as a novel. However, this lead me to another issue: what about the music? How is this going be labeled? It can't just be a "What is this?";</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> One of my good friends asked me why not make my book, <u>A Tale of Two Fools</u>, an opera, oratorio, or musical? Problems and more problems.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> A) An <b>opera </b>company wouldn't play it..flat out...refer to the title of this blog and change the word ""German" to "Italian".</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> B) A <b>musical </b>COULD happen; however, I don't want to have a pit of seven people. This isn't the fifties. How many musicals have the large pits that is required of West Side Story? In the age where Broadway is using a Motif instead having live trumpets, I can forget about having my dream-sized pit. Plus, there is not trumpet synth in the world that could come CLOSE to sounding like Jon Faddis, Sean Jones, Byron Stripling, and Oscar Brashear put together. Also, four string players are not going to cut it. I want to tell this story symphonically and I'm sticking by it.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> C) <b>Oratorio/Concert Versio</b>n could work also and be financially feasible. I may do put it in this format later on.</span><br><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span><br><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span>
</div><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">4) In the end, I decided to make this a Novel/CD companion (James Aikman calls this project a musical drama). There would be great possibilities from this. I could get the singers I want whenever they were available (the beauty of multi-track recording [thank you ProTools] ). I could also use whatever instrumentation I wanted. Let's talk about the cons. I would be forced to stay within the 80 minutes confinement of a CD</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">. Aikman also suggested that I stay around 75 minutes to avoid possible CD-replication errors (great advice). Granted, I could do a two-CD set but that would drive my cost up astronomically. In the end, I went with about 76 minutes of music having to drop three songs off the CD (about twelve minutes worth of music.)</span>
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><i>What about digital download? There's not a time-frame for that </i>I'll answer that one later.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"> In conclusion, I realize many conflicts are internal. I have resolved mine. This CD, my musical drama <u><b> A Tale of Two Fools: A Soundtrack of a Universal Language</b></u> will have classical, jazz, R&B and hip-hop and I make no apologies for the amalgamation of styles. </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">I look at musical trailblazers like Daisy Newman who created the African-American Reading sessions with the Detroit Symphony; Anthony Davis, the father of <i>opera politica america</i>; and Henry Lewis who are/were unapologetic of their vision and passion. I stand to imitate.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">Now that I have started this blog, I will use this to talk about my creative processes of my compositions, librettos, novels, videos, and in-depth writings/discussions about </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><b style="text-decoration: underline;">A Tale of Two Fools.</b> </span><br><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;"><br></span></span><br><br><div><span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px; line-height: 15px;">Much Love,</span></span></div>
